Over the past year, LessonLab has had the privilege of collaborating with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu to explore the potential of AI-powered learning simulations in medical education.

As part of a Proof of Concept (PoC) project, an innovative learning simulation was developed to help medical students to practice diagnosing strain injuries of the hand and forearm. This simulation gives students the opportunity to practice their skills and learn from mistakes without any risk to real patients.

The AI model was trained using the Finnish Current Care Guidelines for hand and forearm diseases, as well as healthcare unit costs and social services data. In the simulation, student responses are compared to real-life expert diagnoses and treatment plans based on similar patient cases.

The simulation includes five unique yet representative patient cases, offering students a comprehensive opportunity to practice clinical encounters, patient interaction, and make diagnostic and treatment decisions. To evaluate its effectiveness, the simulation was tested in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) at the University of Oulu, involving eleven 4th- and 5th-year medical students and two physiotherapy students nearing graduation.

The results of the RCT are set to be published in the spring of 2025 in a relevant academic journal. Early feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as:

A great learning tool, especially for students starting clinical work.

At LessonLab, we are pioneering the future of medical education by delivering immersive, AI-driven learning experiences that not only enhance clinical competence but also boost student confidence.
