The year 2024 has been transformative for the education industry, with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) firmly establishing itself as a powerful tool for learning and development. According to a recent report by Cengage Group, the use of GenAI among higher education instructors has nearly doubled, rising from 24% in 2023 to 45% in 2024. Furthermore, 90% of instructors believe GenAI will play an increasingly significant role in education in the coming years. The corporate training market has also embraced GenAI as a game-changer, leveraging its potential to create personalized training content, adaptive learning paths, simulated learning environments, and automated assessments with real-time feedback.
For LessonLab, 2024 has marked a pivotal shift. In addition to our expertise in game-based learning technology, we have doubled down on AI-driven simulation technology. This strategic shift has driven significant changes across our strategy, technology, product development, and operations.
Strategic shift: Artificial intelligence – A new direction for LessonLab
This year has been a defining moment for LessonLab as we embarked on a bold strategic transformation. Known for developing game-based training applications, we have now set our sights on something even more ambitious: becoming a leader in providing a cutting-edge technology platform for creating realistic educational and training simulations.
Our vision is clear—to build the world’s best platform for educational simulations that tackle real-world challenges. To achieve this, we have expanded our focus on serving universities to corporate trainers and consultants, while rethinking how training is designed. Instead of concentrating solely on skills and knowledge, we now prioritize building and assessing broader competencies that align with real-world demands.
At the heart of this shift is our commitment to moving beyond traditional theory and skill-oriented training to a phenomenon-driven approach. We are diving deep into complex, real-world scenarios to create simulations that go beyond theory and technical skills, immersing learners in practical, impactful experiences. Supporting this evolution is our integration of the latest advancements in generative AI, accelerating our product and technology development at an unprecedented pace.
This transformation has touched every corner of LessonLab, from our strategy and technology to the way we engage with our customers. It is an exciting time, and we are more committed than ever to delivering solutions that reshape the future of education and training.
Investing in technology: Taito platform, data security and new simulations
This year, LessonLab has made significant investments in technology to enhance our ability to deliver first-class AI-based simulation experiences. A cornerstone of these efforts has been the development and launch of our Taito platform. This innovative technology, the first of its kind globally, enables educational simulations to be developed quickly and easily without requiring any programming skills. For our customers, Taito represents a major breakthrough, offering cost-effective customization of simulations tailored to their specific needs.
Equally important has been our focus on data security. Recent studies reveal that concerns around data safety remain one of the primary barriers to adopting AI solutions in corporate environments. To address this, we integrated Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service into Taito platform, ensuring all simulation-generated data is safely stored. This enhancement not only strengthens trust among our customers but also aligns with the strictest data protection standards (e.g., EU AI Act).
In addition to the platform itself, LessonLab has expanded its library of ready-made AI-based simulations, which have been warmly received by many of our customers. These simulations cover a variety of topics, including consultative sales, leadership communication, employee performance evaluation, and stakeholder engagement. Each simulation is rooted in scientifically validated frameworks and designed to elevate and reliably assess specific real-life competencies essential for navigating leadership challenges. Looking ahead, we aim to broaden this portfolio further, offering solutions that address an even wider range of complex, real-world phenomena.
To support this technological leap, LessonLab has also invested in growing its team. In November 2024, Carita Furstenborg joined us as a full-stack developer, bringing fresh expertise and energy to our product and technology development efforts. With a growing team, we have also expanded our physical footprint, opening a new office in Keilaranta 3, Espoo, Finland—a space that reflects the innovative and collaborative spirit driving LessonLab forward.
Expanding partnerships: Collaboration at the core
At LessonLab, collaboration with partners is central to our mission of developing meaningful and impactful solutions. By working closely with universities, research institutions, and corporate clients, we ensure our simulations address real-world needs and challenges while being grounded in scientifically validated frameworks. This co-creation model allows us to continuously refine and expand our offerings, ensuring they remain relevant, evidence-based, and effective across diverse educational and professional contexts.
Our partnerships also play a crucial role in broadening the application of our simulations. Through these collaborations, we explore new ways to integrate our solutions into various university and corporate training environments, helping organizations enhance learning outcomes and develop critical skills.
In 2024, LessonLab has entered into several significant new partnership agreements within both the university sector and corporate training markets. These partnerships have not only expanded the reach of our solutions but also strengthened our ability to deliver cutting-edge, research-based simulations tailored to the specific needs of diverse learning contexts. Together with our partners, we are pushing the boundaries of AI-driven simulations to ensure their rigor, relevance, and transformative potential in education and training.
What’s ahead for 2025?
The adoption of generative AI is set to continue accelerating across industries, with education poised to experience some of the most transformative changes. Tailored educational content and personalized training experiences for learners are expected to become central to this shift. At LessonLab, we are committed to supporting this evolution by focusing on three key areas in 2025.
First, we will continue to enhance our Taito platform, introducing new functionalities and improving the user experience. One of the most anticipated updates is the integration of a speech interface, making interactions within simulations more intuitive and engaging. Usability will also remain a top priority as we refine the platform to ensure it meets the needs of diverse user groups.
Second, we plan to expand our portfolio of ready-made simulations. Building on the success of our current offerings, we aim to introduce new simulations that address an even broader spectrum of real-world challenges and scenarios.
Finally, we will focus on growing our global customer and distribution network across our core segments. By strengthening relationships and reaching new markets, we aim to bring our cutting-edge solutions to organizations worldwide, empowering more professionals and students to harness the potential of AI-driven learning.
Looking Forward
As we enter this new chapter, our mission remains clear: to revolutionize learning and development through innovative, scalable, and impactful solutions. We look forward to working with our partners and customers to achieve this shared vision.
